What you need to know for the upcoming 2021 Baseball Season

River Rats and Friends,

We are pleased to announce that the Registration for the 2021 season is now underway.  We are eager to play ball again after having made the tough decision to cancel our 2020 season.  While we know there is still a Pandemic going on, we are committed to operating a ball season under the Eastern Ontario Health Units (EOHU) guidelines.

The one thing we have learned from the past year is flexibility.  While our plan is to get kids back out and enjoying the sun and some sports, it is possible that there could be delays outside of our control.  This could have an effect on our schedule.  Our current plan is to open our season May 3rd with August 13th being our end date for House League.  We are committed to playing baseball and will make adjustments where necessary.

The current guidelines put a max of 50 kids per division so please register as soon as you can to guarantee your spot.  You can register without having to pay right away.  We are working on a plan for in person registration and payment that would work under the EOHU Guidelines.

Baseball is an easy sport to play while respecting the current crisis we are going through because we are outdoors and generally spaced far apart.  It makes it easy to get the kids out to be active and healthy in an environment with a much lower chance of transmission than most other sports.

Below are some changes, highlights and what to expect for the upcoming season:

Branding – We are unveiling a new River Rats logo and all of our travelling teams will be called the Cornwall River Rats.  We will have standardized uniforms across all of our divisions.

House League – House League is going to look different as well.  We will be starting the year off with a 2-week training camp that will consist of Pitching, Hitting, Fielding, Catching clinics and general baseball clinics and practices.  We will also be assessing players and then performing the draft at the end of the second week of training.

House league will then commence and will finish by 13 August (subject to change if there is another lockdown).  The schedule will be lighter starting in July (one game a week) to accommodate travelling teams and summer vacations.

You can register under the registration tab @ www.cornwallbaseball.com

Costs – We have gone with a flat rate of $100 across all divisions this year which is $25 less for Minor and above from our previous season.  We had plans to further drop prices for T-Ball and Coach Pitch but because of huge losses of rental revenue due to the Pandemic we were forced to reverse our course.

For those who make their respective travelling team, the cost to play will be $500 for the season for Minor and above with Coach Pitch coming in at $400.  This will cover a complete ball uniform (socks, pants, shirt, hat and helmet).  It will also cover 5 tournaments (which includes a home tournament) plus the Little League tournament.  This pays for field rentals, umpires, equipment, exhibition games and some other miscellaneous expenses.  There may be additional fundraising done to either pay for additional goodies or more tournaments or to lower the cost of the season but that will be left up to the coaches and parents to decide.  There also may be less tournaments due to the Pandemic.  In either case, full financial accounting will be done and provided, any leftover money will be refunded.

Volunteers – We are always looking for volunteers.  If you have older kids who play ball and are looking to gain experience with either coaching or mentoring young people, we are always looking for helpers with T-Ball.  It’s an excellent way to start developing leadership skills at a young age and learning how to interact with the general public.  It’s also a good way to give back to the community.  CDMB is a volunteer run organization.  This can also be used to get high school volunteer hours.  Please reach out to us if you or your child is interested.

Don’t be afraid to help the coach out, especially if the coach is alone.  Batting orders, kids getting catching gear on and bench management is tough for one person.

Our park and program is maintained by an Army of volunteers which includes coaches, organizers, grass cutters and park maintainers.  We are very unique as we privately operate our own park.  It is not a City Park.  If you are interested in an Executive Role within CDMB, please reach out.

Coaches – We are looking for coach’s in house league in all divisions.  Please indicate on your child’s registration if you would be interested or e-mail us.  We are also looking for coaches for our travelling teams in Minor, Major and Junior.  There is a process to choosing a travelling team coach which includes a submitted resume, interview, background check of references.  If you are interested, please reach out with your resume and references.  We are conducting interviews in early April.  You can send your resume to the e-mail below.

Renovations – Our park is now over 30 years old and in need of some repairs and renovations.  Over the next few years, we are going to be aggressively repairing and improving Legion Park.  We are planning on erecting our first lights for night games by the start of the 2023 season on D4 and/or D6.  We are going to be doing some serious fundraising so stay tuned and be ready to support.

Umpiring – We are always looking for new umpires, young or experienced.  Please reach out to our Umpire in Chief if you or your child is 13 years or older and wishes to become an Umpire with CDMB.  There will be an Umpiring Clinic in the spring.  Dates to be determined.

If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions we are always available so please reach out to us.

Yours in Baseball,
